About me
I am a formalist. I take pleasure in how well a painting is put together. It is a purely practical, almost physiological pleasure, like the satisfaction of well-tailored clothes. So when I paint, I want the lightness and peace that arrive when every form finds its rightful place.
For inspiration I look to the old masters, returning again and again to Velázquez, Titian, and Vermeer. It is the quiet, effortless clarity of their vision that I admire most, and that I try to bring to my own work.
Alongside my studio work I teach painting masterclasses. My paintings are held in private collections in Latvia, England, India, Sweden, and the USA.
